Roller Derby Residency at The Leonardo

My roller derby league, The Red Rockettes, is doing a residency about sport, art, and identity at The Leonardo from May 9th – May 27th! I’m particularly excited about the derby fashion show! I’ve always wanted to skate around a museum in a leotard.

Here’s some info from The Leonardo website:

The Lab rolls into summer with The Red Rockettes Roller Derby League. Roller Derby is the fastest growing sport in the U.S., and you can spend the month with “Jammers,” “Blockers” Refs, and the community of skaters in Salt Lake City. Join these real life, identity-transforming, Roller Derby super-heroes. Learn about the physics and engineering behind skating, and create comic book Pop-Art zines with Roller Derby characters.

Daily drop-ins: Drawing Villains and Super-heroes, Creating Zines, Sport Photography, Skate Care, Skate Fashion, technologies and new materials.

Get hands-on with technology of modern equipment and Safety on Wheels, just in time for the warm weather!

Apocalyptikiss | The Mandate Press

S&E gallery is officially closed but there’s no end to art and fun times! My partner Matt Black and I will be contributing some pieces to The Mandate Press grand opening art show, Apocalyptikiss, on March 3rd. For those who don’t know, The Mandate Press is a really cool letterpress shop in town. It’s actually been around since 2004 but they’ve recently moved into a new space and it’s time to celebrate. Stop by  and say hello, 1077 S. Main St. 7-10PM.

Danielle Mariott | Scapes

Danielle Mariott was the first artist Stolen & Escaped Gallery ever showed. She headlined our grand opening back in June of 2010 with an amazing exhibit of paintings and drawings. Since then she has contributed paintings, drawings, photos, and video to several different shows, both group and solo. She is one of my favorite artists in Salt Lake City and it seems only fitting that she should headline the last exhibit at Stolen & Escaped Gallery.

S&E will be closing at the end of February. We’d like to thank everyone, both artist and spectator, for supporting us over the last two years. We’ve loved running our upstart basement gallery, but the time has come to start working on some new projects.

Please join us this this Friday January 20th from 6-9pm for the opening reception of Scapes, a solo photography exhibit by Danielle Mariott. The show will run through February 11th.

Horny | Nic Annette Miller

Nic Annette Miller’s upcoming solo show, HORNY, at Stolen & Escaped Gallery, is described as “a play on words exploring the wildlife, in particular the horns of the massive creatures in our mountain landscape, such as the Rocky Mountain Elk”.

In a more literal sense, “horny” can be translated as point of attraction, which is reflected in the intricacy of woodcut reliefs laid beneath life-size prints of elk, birds, and bees, visualizing a subtle presence of sexuality through a positive natural force.

Horny opens on Friday December 2nd with a public reception from 6-9pm and will run through Saturday January 13th

Don’t miss it!

Strange Mirror | video art by Matt Black

This Friday, November 18th, Stolen & Escaped Gallery is proud to present Strange Mirror a collection of past and present work by video artist Matt Black that centers around ideas of identity and place as they intersect in the artist’s hometown of Salt Lake City.

Matt works from a poetic, observational space in which the mundane takes on a surreal quality. The show runs one night only. Don’t miss it!

Autogenus Automatus | Shilo Jackson

This Friday, October 21st, Stolen & Escaped Gallery is pleased to present Autogenus Automatus:
a new solo exhibition of paintings by Shilo Jackson. The paintings are done in a tromp l’oeil style, which translates to “trick the eye”. It’s an age-old technique used to create optical illusions with highly realistic depictions of scenes and objects.

Click the link below to read more about the upcoming show and the incredibly talented Shilo Jackson in the October issue of 15bytes:

“What do Salvador Dali, Alice in Wonderland, the Mona Lisa, and fortunes from cookies have in common? For one thing, they are among the ephemera collected by Shilo Jackson to be used in various combinations someday in a painting.

At a glance one might think these bits and pieces of collected material are collaged to a cork or fabric background. That’s the trick. Actually, they are carefully and highly realistically painted. Even the cork is an illusion, painstakingly painted to make you believe you could feel the rough texture if you touched it.

The show will run through Saturday November 12th. Don’t miss it!

More from the Presses!

Cara Despain whispers ‘timbre’

One small correction to the latest Tribune article, the show runs through Saturday October 15th. You can view timbre any time during Frosty Darling’s regular business hours. Just ask for assistance upstairs if I am not in my office. I will be in the gallery every Saturday through closing from 1-6pm showing the film in a continuous loop.
